East takes his spade ace, leaving no doubt that West led a singleton. Nevertheless,
East returns the diamond deuce. What should South be thinking about? If
he fails to realize what East is up to, he will go down in a cold contract. Why is
East delaying the spade ruff? Easy – after he wins the heart ace and gives West
a spade ruff, West will return a diamond for East to ruff. Down One.
South should neutralize the defense by cashing three rounds of clubs, pitching his
good spade king. When he knocks out the trump ace, he wins the return and
draw trumps — making an overtrick rather than going down one.
